Childcare subsidy in Alberta (2026)
Alberta's childcare landscape changes often. Here's what's currently true (we update this guide regularly).
The two main programs
1. Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care (the "$10/day program")
A federal-provincial agreement that reduces fees at participating licensed providers. Most centres in Calgary and Edmonton participate, but not all dayhomes do. Available to all families at participating providers — not income-tested.
2. Alberta Child Care Subsidy
An additional, income-tested monthly benefit for families using licensed or approved care. The amount depends on household income, family size, and hours of care needed.
Who qualifies for the Alberta Child Care Subsidy?
Eligibility is based on:
- Annual household income (thresholds updated each year)
- Number of dependent children
- Use of licensed care
- Reason for care (work, school, medical, looking for work)
Specific thresholds change annually. The Government of Alberta posts updated tables — we link to the current version inside your Waitlist Buddy dashboard.
How to apply
- Choose a licensed provider or approved dayhome
- Confirm they participate in subsidy
- Submit your application via the Alberta.ca childcare portal
- Provide proof of income (last year's CRA Notice of Assessment is usually enough)
Documents you'll need
- ✓Child's birth certificate
- ✓Government-issued ID for parent(s)
- ✓Most recent CRA Notice of Assessment
- ✓Proof of reason for care (employment letter, school enrollment, etc.)
- ✓Provider information / licence number
Common questions
Can I apply before I have a spot? Yes — but the subsidy only begins when you start care.
What if I switch providers? You'll update the subsidy file with the new provider's details. There's no penalty.
What about Kin Care? Alberta has a separate Kin Child Care Funding Program for relatives providing care. Smaller and more restrictive — but worth checking if family is helping out.
