Calgary's childcare landscape changes every quarter. This guide is updated for 2026 and focuses on what Calgary parents actually need to know.

How long are the waits?

Waits are longest in the inner-city quadrants (Inglewood, Beltline, Bridgeland, Kensington) and shortest in newer suburbs (Cranston, Mahogany, Tuscany).

Apply broadly by neighbourhood

Calgary parents who land care within their preferred window typically apply to 8–12 providers across two or three nearby neighbourhoods. Here's a sensible spread:

• Inner city / SW: Sage & Story Montessori, Little Maple Daycare, Bridge Land Co-op
• NW: Northern Lights Childcare, Tuscany Trees, Crowfoot Garden School
• SE: Riverbend Children's Garden, Mahogany Co-op, Auburn Bay Preschool
• Dayhomes: Sunbeam Family Dayhome and other agency-approved homes

Licensed vs unlicensed in Alberta

In Alberta, licensed centres and approved family dayhomes must meet provincial standards (staff-to-child ratios, criminal record checks, safety inspections). Unlicensed dayhomes can be lovely — but they aren't inspected by the province.

$10/day childcare in Calgary

Most licensed centres in Calgary participate in the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care system. Eligible families pay a reduced daily fee. If a provider is enrolled, they must offer the reduced rate to qualifying parents — ask explicitly when you tour.

• September starts are the most competitive — most centres rebalance rooms in late spring.
• Mid-year openings happen most often in November and February.
• August can be surprisingly fluid as families finalize their school-year plans.
