What to ask before joining a waitlist

You don't need to tour before applying. You don't even need to fall in love. You just need enough info to decide if a list is worth being on. Here's a short, safe set of questions to ask via email or quick call.

  • Is your centre currently licensed?
  • Do you participate in the $10/day program?
  • What's the realistic waitlist length for the room my child needs?
  • Is there a waitlist fee? Is it refundable if I decline?
  • What's your typical staff turnover?
  • How do you handle children with allergies/medical needs?
  • Do you have a behavioural / discipline philosophy in writing?
  • What's your sick policy? Do siblings get priority?
  • Can I be on the list for multiple sites under the same operator?
  • What documents do you require if we're offered a spot?
  • Can I update my information without losing my position?
  • How do you usually contact families when a spot opens?

Red flags (gently)

You don't need a long list of warning signs — a few are enough:

  • They can't (or won't) say if they're licensed
  • The waitlist fee is large and non-refundable
  • They pressure you to decide within hours
  • Staff turnover sounds high without explanation
  • The space smells off when you tour (literally)

Green flags

  • Clear, kind communication
  • They ask thoughtful questions about your child
  • They have written policies they're happy to share
  • They mention transitions and how they handle them
  • A waitlist deposit that's small and refundable

Get organized

A small reminder

You're allowed to ask all twelve questions. You're also allowed to ask one and trust your gut. There's no perfect interview — just enough info to feel okay saying yes to being on a list.

FAQ

Do I need to tour before joining a waitlist?+

No. Get on the list first. Tour the top 3–5 once you're a few months from your target start date.

Is it rude to ask for a fee refund if I decline?+

Not at all. Most Calgary and Edmonton centres refund waitlist deposits when families decline.
